What is your opinion on market research?

How important is it to keep up to date on what the new trends are in you market? How much time and energy do you devote to this at your company?

It is necessary. But not always in that traditional $50,000 way. Don't get me wrong I love the precise and expensive stuff. The best way to keep up is through secondary research and RSS feeds from your best industry sources. They post lots of great stuff. You should devote a couple hours per week to that. The new trends I like are rapidly deployed email surveys. They can inform a larger project if needed. I also love LOVE zoomerang.com. In today's fast moving environment, third party studies combined with good instincts will drive success. The first question you should ask though is: "What decisions do I want to make by doing this research?". Begin.
