What is your opinion on online marketing?
I have a small deli, and I currently don't market online. I don't have a website or do any marketing online, but I am listed on Yelp. I have enough local promotion to bring in business, but I do plan on opening a new location soon. Is it essential to actively market your business online? What is the ROI for online marketing?

Kim,
It really depends on your client-tel. Think about what motivates clients to come to your deli and buy? For example, is your location next to a college, business offices, government building, shopping mall, airport etc.
See if you can reach out to this traffic using online marketing (i.e. Online Ads on social networking sites, Content Ads on Google, placement in Google Places, e-promotions/e-coupons, viral campaigns on Facebook). Then think about what messages would influence them to:
(i) want to come to you
(ii) remember you when they are out
(iii) keep coming back to you for more
If you can answer these questions with confidence then you maybe on to something. Try testing your initial messages on Facebook Ads (since setup is fast and easy and you can test it on specific demographics). Once you've fine tuned your message you can launch a broader campaign. If you have a tech-savy crowd then also look into geo-social networking tools (Flowd.com, GoWalla.com, Foursquare.com, Loopit.com) to see what marketing options you've there.
Online marketing ROI is relative to your industry and locality - so I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as you attract more customers and make a profit, its worth developing further.
