What is the market share of the top IP PBX brands?

I'm looking for a new solution for my Michigan business and currently considering Asterisk, Cisco CallManager, ShoreTel & Allworx. I can't seem to find any info that speaks to the market share of these brands. Any help would be appreciated.

Most analysts see market share as follows:
1. Cisco
2. Avaya
3. Nortel
4. NEC
5. Mitel

There are a couple of interesting dynamics to make note of though. First, if you combine Avaya and Nortel, they are now the market share leader. Second, a lot of this depends on what size business you have and what your requirements are. For example, Shoretel is one of the fastest growing vendors right now and they have the mid-market to thank for that ,while Siemens has shown aggregate weakness but continued strength in the enterprise segment. Third, no one does a good job of counting Asterisk based systems right now. At Focus, we believe that it is a collective force to reckoned with across all segments.

I found this article to be very useful. It is based on a survey of consultants.

Avaya, Mitel, Cisco and NEC seem to be the best bets to choose from.

I bet a lot of people aren't aware of this... but did you know that 18% of the entire PBX market in North America is Open Source? 85% of that is all Asterisk! (Eastern Management Group study)

So I'd definitely put Asterisk based PBX systems on the list. These open source systems like Asterisk have also experienced 40% growth between 2008-2009. This is without a doubt one of the fastest growing sectors in the PBX market.

Open Source PBX systems aren't without some confusion though... lots of people have a hard time understanding them due to lots of conflicting information. But I can confirm first hand that built by the right company they can be rock solid, feature rich, and a very wise investment. If you're concerned about support and reliability, then I can also say first hand... don't be because Asterisk is used by the military, hospitals, schools, PSAP operators (911), and pretty much every other industry out there.

With the exception of Cisco, that could have been the answer to digital PBXs in the 90s, hybrid analog/digital PBXs in the 80s, right down to Mitel who about ran Ma Bell out of the business in the hotel motel industry leading up to 84! The more things change the more they stay the same!

Most analysts see market share as follows:
1. Cisco
2. Avaya
3. Nortel
4. NEC
5. Mitel

Dennis, can you comment on Zultys' market share specifically? It looks like you work there. I only ask b/c I think most buyers had the impression that Zultys was no longer in business.

Thanks in advance for clarifying.

David, I think you might be interested in a white paper published recently by the Eastern Management Group (you can download it from http://www.xorcom.com/ftp/partners/emg-battlefield-white-paper.pdf ).
The paper contains a graph of the proprietary PBX systems that are considered (in %) alongside open source systems. Among other interesting statistics, the research reports:
"The market for proprietary PBX systems showed just modest signs of being on the road to recovery in the first half of 2009.
By contrast, Open Source PBX systems delivered an astounding 30 percent growth during the same period."

I think there are a lot of opinions on this subject. It also appears that most everyone has something to sell, which makes it tough to see the forest through the trees. I believe it really depends on the size of the company and the level of support the customer wants and is willing to pay for. There are no real market share numbers for open source, because the analysts have no way to count boxes or lines shipped. Open source is the best option if price is considered, but support is the real cost if they choose an Asterisk based system from any one of the dozens of Asterisk PBXes that are available. All the proprietary PBX systems cost more and in some cases the support costs much more too.

We are reseller for both Shoretel and Allworx. We have attempted to sell and install a few Asterisk systems in the past and they were not as stable, did not perform as well, did not have a very good total cost of ownership, etc...Cisco is a good system, but they cost a fortune. Allworx is owned by Paetec, which is one of the top carriers in the US. They are great for businesses with 5-60 users. Shoretel is a much more cost effective solution than Cisco and provides just as many, if not more, bells and whistles. When you are shopping for a new system think value and total cost of ownership, not market share. If you want to go with the company that has the most market share then throw in the towl right now and buy Cisco or Avaya. Market Share does not mean they have the system for you and your company.
