Managing a remote workforce is no different than managing an on-premise workforce. Telephone, instant messaging, Web conferencing, teamr ooms and so on replace the physical interaction, but not the emotional interaction. Managers who respect the maturity of their employees will prosper more than those who don't. This is a human issue, not a technological one.

You should get value from "How Will You Manage? Best Practices for the Remote Manager" http://developers.sun.com/toolkits/articles/manage.html

Several years ago at a heavy machinery repair and maintenance company having remote operations in different states in USA, I was hired to improve its IT infrastructure because the company thought that their head of operations, sales, and accounts were having issues due to it. During my several discussions with its employees including the department heads about the issues that they were facing, I realized that almost all of their work was paper-based and that then thought of an online software which could help them in data management, knowledge discovery, and risk management. For this, I had to learn on their data and its flow including to/from their remote operations. I shared the idea with the owner and the department heads and that for the approval of the project I had to create, and make presentations on the issues and the benefits of the software which required more IT infrastructure including advanced IBM server machine and Windows server software. It was approved after my several attempts including by demonstrating the value of such a software through prototypes and that then I had designed and implemented it for the company.

Today I've started work on a similar software for small to medium level gyms and fitness centers. A friend working on this business with me owns a top gym and fitness center with world class USA equipment and that he has competed from India at world championships in Judo.
