The ratio between revenue and marketing budget varies heavily depending on the companies market share, industry, market's maturity and strategic goals of the company. I have seen it range from 1-50%. It would be better to look at the marketing expenses verse the gross profit. This eliminates some of the effects between high margin and low margin industries. For business's I've seen, this narrows the range down to 10-30%, if early stage start-ups and other outliers are removed. Without knowing the other factors involved, it is impossible to give a narrow range for marketing expenditures.
