I lead marketing for NCM Fathom Business Events, and our clients use our movie theater network for live satellite (or pre-recorded messages then broadcast over our network) broadcasts to reach audiences in up to 700 cinema locations. I asked Dennis Shiao - @dshiao - if he thought these qualified as "virtual events," because I've argued with myself about this very topic. We both decided that yes, these are virtual events since the presenter(s) are located in one location and being seen "virtually" on movie screens across the U.S. The reason I questioned myself is that in the live broadcast scenario, it is truly a LIVE event. But then again, the exact same thing can be said of webinars. The presenter is LIVE and the audiences are participating using their local PCs. So, we come full circle to the conclusion that cinema broadcast events are indeed virtual events.

Laura: yeah, whether it's a satellite feed providing the "transport" or the World Wide Web, I think that both scenarios qualify as "virtual events."

I love this...totally different take on the virtual event. Thanks for contributing.
