What relevance will Diaspora have for business?

Do you foresee Diaspora, the open source alternative to social networking sites like Facebook, being a meaningful tool for businesses? What are the benefits and drawbacks of using Diaspora for business purposes? Are you planning to use Diaspora to promote your business/communicate with customers when the site debuts?

From my perspective, Diaspora's relevance for promotion will be no more than any other Social Networking (SN) facility. The fact that this platform is being built to reduce the affects of FB's poor security policies and procedures doesn't change the fact that businesses must manage their use of SNs for promotion or otherwise. Even if (as proposed) Diaspora will feature controls allowing you to set "who sees what", I think your web efforts would be better spent building more specific assets.

Assuming you are not selling directly via the web, I believe if you are going to promote your business you should develop a descriptive site first. This give you the advantage of an online calling card explaining your business right away.

If you want to extent your influence then engaging others via SNs and backlink to your site can be valuable - if done with care. If you believe in the need to engage your potential clients/customers directly from your site then you can implement your own forum/blog, which keeps the focus (and control) in the realm of your business.

I think Diaspora is still in Geek Mode for the time being.

Here's a nice Metaphor. Facebook is like Microsoft in the late 90's. Diaspora could end up like Linux or they could end up like Apple.

IF they figure out a simple way to both market and rent servers or seeds to the average joe then they could build up Hype like Apple and slowly grow into a niche market.

In terms of business...not really thinking that is even a blip a this point.
