Hello Toby,
What is rugged wireless? That's a good question to me rugged wireless is more an equipment question then an application question. Rugged wireless is normally associated with manufacturing, utilities, healthcare, and military, who need mobile devices that can go into hostile areas and still work under extreme condition like heat, cold, and dust. These mobile devices are usually not treated very well, but are expected to work with very liite maintainence. Some of the best examples of rugged devices are Iconics there mobile devices are encased in rugged plastic. I use to use them we called them "the Brick" the mobile device a smart phone had a mini keyboard that is waterproof, and dustproof, could connect as a phone, wifi, or WLAN/LAN. While Iconics is not known by the public. Companies like Sears have used them since the late 90's. The next company with a very good rugged pen tablet device is Equus. I know that many enterprises are thinking IPad for pen tablets they will fold like paper under a real use and I hate to burst some bubbles but ipads are not the first tablet computer pen tablets have been around for about ten years. Back to Equus their rugged pen tablets are not only able to withstand drops of about ten feet. The screen is water proof and scratch resistant, has handwritting recongition, keyboard, wifi, and WLAN are also part of the on board system can run Windows OS and can be upgraded to use Unix and Linuix OS. Of I don't want to for get Textronic, Symbol, and Panasonic who also creates some very rugged mobile devices. If you like to know more about rugged wireless computing I am part of a group on LinkedIn called Field Technologies Online that talks about mobility in the field. Check us out if you need more info visit my website at www.wireheadtec.bravehost.com or email and I can send you white papers on Field Technology from the many white papers we have from top mobile vendors.
