What should I do about overqualified candidates?

Since the job market is so slim, I'm having a lot of overqualified candidates apply for nearly entry-level positions. Should I keep them in my consideration set, or should their interest raise red flags?

This is a feature of the recessionary times we live in I suspect. Why would it necessarily raise a red flag? Sometimes taking on someone with a higher level of qualification will bring fringe benefits - extra skills that you can draw on and that the employee is happy to share.

Care also needs to be taken not to be indirectly discriminating against older workers by setting aside the over qualified candidates. The chances are that the proportion of candidates with more qualifications is likely to be higher in an older population.
