What should go in your email signature?

I think this is a sales and marketing question. I think most people believe that the email signature is an important source of "marketing", what should go in the signature?

An email signature is an electronic version of a business card. It should be simple, but provide all the information relevant to your business.

As social media become a larger part of business, you might have links to LinkedIn, Twitter or even Facebook. It depends on your business. If you are an online company having these links is more important than a company such as a Furniture business.

Also, the nature of the email can play a role into what you put on your signature. If you are sending an email to a new customer, you should provide more information. Your signature should be different when you are replying to an email. The person already has your information and this will de-clutter the email.

Having "too much" information isn't selfish, rather it is providing the recipient with an array of ways to contact you. It gives you options. If you feel it is cluttered, then doesn't the internet feel cluttered as well? Isn't life cluttered? I agree if you keep receiving the same signature on an email thread, then it is annoying. But this is part of life on the Internets.

This is a great question. Your email signature is a superb soft selling tool.

My recommendations include:
Name, Title, email address
Website
Linkedin and Twitter profiles
Links to blog article of note or upcoming events

Keep it simple, but focus on a few high value items.

Hope that helps,

I maintain what I refer to as a living signature. I have a file and database of my many social media profiles. My standard signature has links to one profile attached to my name. I include my website link and a link to my latest eBook or electronic paper or presentation.
However, the database and social media file are kept so I can change links in my signature easily when I want to customize it for a particular client or campaign. I keep a back up of the standard signature to replace the customer signature when I decide to change it again.
I don't hesitate to think creatively and adjust my signature to match the needs of the moment. It's easy with the file, database and backup of my standard signature. Copy and paste is good.

One of everything:

one name
one number
one email address
one hyper-link

Stop crapping up my screen with all 38 thousand of your social media profiles. They just make me angry.

It's another indication of selfish behavior. It's not about "you". It's about "me" the buyer.

Let me know where to reach you and then get the hell out of my way...

Dan

p.s. Sorry this is a big pet peeve of mine (like a lot of other things)... :-)

Good stuff Jeff.

It's a good place to promote a chunky piece of content, a recent blog post, an upcoming event.

Chances are you already know the target audience here, so you can put in more customer service & loyalty messages.
