Strictly speaking, Data Center is not just about cabling, cooling, power, and physical security but also about the servers for the needed computing resource, storage to keep data and information and network that provides the connectivity within and to the outside of the Data Center.
A data center can be anywhere a processing resource and/or data storage exists. It does not 'absolutely' need an internet connection, as there are many Wide Area (and even some Local Area) networks that can connect to it. But, from general 'best design practices', a datacenter will have connectivity of some type, proper cooling and humidity control for it's servers, network devices, and storage of some type; it should include basic redundancy for power, with some sort of power back-up, as well as redundancy of all other systems - for proper fault tolerance. Generally, some sort of management (whether personnel, management software, or some combination of both) should be available.
I would say to be considered a data center and not a server room you should meet some very basic criteria. This is not a complete list of what a datacenter “should” have, but I say without these you cant call it a datacenter.
- A building or room that is purpose built or modified for the purpose of housing data equipment
- A UPS power system
- Environmental systems to maintain optimal temperature and humidity
mainframe or super computer?
A internet pipe, power and backup systems. Your home is a data center, just as your office. The difference is how much connectivity, power and the type of backup systems.
