Trevor,
We've used pretty much every possible Internet advertising technique you could think of, including all the ones you mentioned. They all turned out with mixed results and never gave us the success we were looking for.
Only two things ever seemed to work well enough: partner marketing and SEO. First of all, putting up ads on the sites of people we do business with on a regular basis (especially our distributors' websites) has yielded good returns. Plus, the distributors WANT ads for the products sold on their site, so they offer good deals on ad placement.
Secondly, our company's name is unique enough that we can specify pretty unique keywords, so we aren't battling with our competitors over the same terms. I highly recommend this approach if you can come up with keywords that are unique to your business and that people will likely type when looking for your type of product or service.
Good luck with your Internet marketing efforts. Remember that there's no "silver bullet" that will solve all your online (and offline) marketing efforts; it's what works best for YOUR business, not mine.
We haven't cut traditional marketing completely out of our budget, but we have turned our attention more towards the free based marketing. We set up profiles across multiple social marketing sites such as twitter, facebook, and linkedin. We try to stay active in our market and we concentrate in our geographical location through the search tools provided on those sites. We still use pay per click and affiliate marketing programs. It's good advertisement for us and it draws in customers. The social sites allow us to cut back on our spending.
