What types of paperwork does one need to have in place in order to hire a part time contract worker?

Aside from a W9, are there any other pieces of paperwork to have in place in order to bring on a part time contractor?

Cathy you are correct that a W-9 is required. Before this step is taken it should be established that the position is truly a contract position, not an employee role. There have been significant wage and hour actions based upon misclassifications. If it is truly a contractor, this should not be their only assignment, they should be able to provide a bid or proposal for the work and an agreement reached about parameters and payment. The combination of terms part time and contractor could lead to questions. I would recommend sticking to independent contractor as a descriptor.

Caty, Rebecca is correct. I want to add that if you are a contractor, the company will tell you WHAT they want done, but will not tell you HOW to do it. Typically, a contractor uses his/her own equipment (laptop, etc.). Sometimes that isn't practical because you are working with their records and have to use their computer. The contractor should have business cards and a website, anything to further prove that s/he is in business, not simply taking this one opportunity.

you should also have a standard "contractor agreement" which stipulates the terms of the arrangement and clarifies what is and what is not contemplated by the relationship.
