Web based ERP is not new, I started in IT in 1980 working for timeshare division of a large global software company. Vendors are just moving applications, including ERP from SDLC protocol to Internet protocol.
Web based ERP is often called Enterprise 2.0, the main difference is the web allows ERP to extend functionality that did not formally exist in the 70's 80’s and 90’s like web content marketing, SCRM etc.
Some other things you might hear:
Enterprise = functionality that allows a company to run SG&A business processes. I.e. Sales, HR, Finance and procurement
2.0 = Web apps that replace in-house software and is integrated to applications that are outside of ERP, i.e. the web, SCRM
Cloud= timeshare
Each process component mentioned would run in a timeshared/web environment, i.e. Order management process would be functionality that allows clients to book orders, accounts receivable would invoice, credit and collections would handle that process, etc. Enterprise 2.0 extends ERP to functionality that did not formally exist until now.
Hope that helps.
