What is your opinion on VoIP video phones?

My colleague mentioned the idea of getting some VoIP video phones for use in our conference rooms. I had to stifle a laugh, because honestly, does anyone even use video phones? Why not use a video web conferencing system? What is your opinion on VoIP video phones?

Personally, I like video phones. And, you will begin to see more and more of them becoming available. For instance, many of the soft clients today have them integrated. So, you make a call over your companies SIP telephone network, with a much higher quality call than you will get with Skype or other free web conference services. You can do conference calls and join in several other people to the conference as well.

The softphones use the same camera as your web conferencing, so some of the same resources can be utilized.

Polycom now has a video phone that supports both standards, the video conference standards for video systems, as well as the standard used in VOIP. I beleive we will see these adopted more and more in corporate America.

With Skype and other video chat service available there is little need for a video phone on your desk. Besides, with a video phone the other party also has to have one or you will not have video.

I really don't see the relevance of a video phone anymore. That was a great idea maybe 10 to 15 years ago.

There are too many cheaper computer-based alternatives such as Skype, Oovoo or even SIP clients such as X-Lite. They are completely portable and support high video resolution and quality. There's just no justification anymore to support the hefty cost of a video phone when cheaper and far more functional solutions exist out there.
