Certainly everyone who has weighed in here is correct: more information on the business and its objectives is needed. But why not have fun with the question? It's not a bad exercise to try to answer the question as asked, absent all finer details.

I'd say SlideShare. It's in many ways the "dot-com" site for our socially sharable content. It also allows form insertion for lead capture. It also provides beefy data. It also enjoys sizable traffic (we've had presentations generate 100K+ views). And it even integrates with Eloqua ... that is, forms submitted via SlideShare automatically populate the marketer's Eloqua database. For me SlideShare has the best of all worlds.

Lauren,

the answer to this question heavily depends on the products and services a company offers and the region in the world they are offered. There are a number of generic professional sites like Linkedin, which competes e.g. with XING in Europe. Looking into consumer sites there is, of course, Facebook, but then Facebook is not so strong in Russia (they have at least 2 ones that are stronger: vKontakt and myWorld). Something similar holds true in China.

Others (with larger amounts of followers) are using Twitter, e.g. Dell.

The story could go on but I guess the summary is that there is not THE one answer.

Cheers
Thomas

On this internet world Social media and professional networks have acquired an integrate role for them in marketing and sales strategies.
Small-medium businesses are considering it seriously for marketing and branding.
For e.g. LinkedIn plays an important role for same.

Lauren, I agree with Karen that is not an issue of what social media, but of how it relates to your goals. Moreover as Thomas was commenting, there is still a lot of heterogeneity at the geographical level. You might first take a look at this interesting and provocative article that defines an easy model for identifying how specific social media relate to business goals. If you are following peoples of your area and all followers of yours are interested any media is good. I mean to say make your base in your area and then publish your products and services.

There really is no one network that is best for everyone. You need to find where your target market is first.
Then star giving them useful information on one or several networks that are a good fit.
Lastly you can filter your results and create a strategy for these networks to get the leads you're looking for .

I wouldn't recommend narrowing your reach by just using one social media site. Using the most commonly used social media sites together as part of a social media strategy would be what I would advise! Here is a whitepaper and webinar which you will find interesting!
