What’s the difference between managed and dedicated server hosting?

I’m looking to secure some server space to support my SMB. We don’t have a lot of storage needs – mainly something that can support a website & handle company data backups. What do you recommend?

In most cases there is no significant difference between a managed server hosting and dedicated server hosting *except* the management.

All servers require management - if you dont have an on-staff trained systems administrator or a 3rd party company that provides this service fro you, then you will want a managed server so the provider performs that critical role.

As to whether your business needs a server a VPS (part of a server) or simply a shared-hosting account (which Joe is confusing terminology over) really depends on your requirements of security, isolation, performance, space, throughput and configuration :)

*Most* of the 300 million websites and email systems in existance are on shared-hosting where multiple sites/users/companies are "sharing" the same physical machine.

Without knowing a lot more about your business and aims it's impossible to provide more specific advice.

Managed Server is one which is maintained but houses many companies sites or data. You dont have the entire server resource to yourself so cannot determine the performance. Should be less expensive though. Dedicated server is where you have your own server either that you supply yourself and setup in the data centre or purchase from the data centre. They then manage it as one of their own but you get to say what goes on that server and thereforer determine perforrmance. A lot more expensive. From your brief description, your website should be houesd by a webhosting company on a shared but managed webserver and your data backups should go to an a specialist online backup company. I would not recommend using one server for both these functions as they require different things and perform differently.

Rob has covered the definitions pretty well.

You could choose from shared hosting, VPS, dedicated or cloud servers. The last three will be available with and without the managed component.

What kind of hosting will suit you best, will depend on a lot of factors like:
a. what is the kind of application/content you will need to host for your SMB.
b. how CPU/memory intensive is it
c. how much disk space and how much bandwidth you will need

Perhaps if you can share more information, I could offer my suggestions.

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Dedicated can be managed and unmanaged. With unmanaged, it's basically just like owning your own server without the risk but you manage and update it on your own. With managed plans, all of your IT needs are taken care of and you're provided monthly reports to make sure all is running smoothly.

I suggest checking out Atum who do both of the above and getting their 30 day free trial to see what and if this fits your needs.
