In my mind, it doesn't matter what you use to build a web site just as long as the end result looks professional.
Use WordPress. it's free and doesn't have any advertising. I used it for my site at www.Quintarra.com.
An interesting question. If the site is uncontrollably full of adverts and pop-ups, then I'd say yes, though the degree to which this would put off customers depends in part on who the target audience is. Some, what I would call "large" businesses, have dire websites, yet they do millions of pound of trade a year, so a poor site doesn't seem to harm them.
Facebook however make one tiny error, and the world notices.
No more than using free mentors would be unprofessional. Another question might be, "when using a website for your business is it unprofessional to pay an arm and a leg for something that is pretty but may be dysfunctional?" Why is the cost of the tool a valid measure of the effectiveness of something?
