Where can I find a free search engine white paper or guide?
I am trying to get an understanding of SEO. Does anyone have any free SEO white papers or free guides on "how to" learn SEO? Any feedback or research material would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A lot of people, including Focus.com's own Audience Development guru Brian Provost, recommend the resources on SEOmoz. You can find a lot of those resources here: http://www.seomoz.org/articles. And if Brian recommends them, you know they are good.
With SEO, you pretty much get what you pay for. If you want free, try the WebmasterWorld forums or read the top blogs.
After you get an idea of terminology and your basic bearings, www.seobook.com , www.seomoz.org , or www.diyseo.com if you are looking for the most bang for your buck. They aren't free but, again, free pretty much sucks in SEO.
With respect to the Google Webmaster Guidelines on SEO (aka the Google Ministry of Disinformation), take them both with a grain of salt and as gospel. You need to learn the limits for your business and what works in your marketplace.
Google actually provides a great free starters guide. This will give you all the basics and is an easy read

Thanks for the starters guide, John. I understand I can google SEO white papers myself, but I always end up spending a half hour sifting through all the junk that gets put in there. I was hoping to get a white paper or research guide that another individual in the community found very helpful and interesting. Thanks again. This guide will definitely be of help. Cheers!
Toby, if you're looking for an understanding of where you websiter is 'now', a benchmark of how well optimised your website's content is and how much authority your site has, get it analysed by www.interleado.com (choose the Search Professional Trial version!).
I know I'm biased, but this will really help you understand, in an easy, non technical way, why your website(s) is not attracting more targeted traffic.
Check out this free guide www.myseotool.com/seo-guide/ or try out their free optimization tool.
I've found TradePub.com to offer a lot of helpful white papers on SEO and a variety of other relevant topics. Also, once you've downloaded a white paper, they will let you know about similar papers that you might want to download.
Honestly, I'm going to watch what other people say in answer to your question because I need some more information here, too!
