Where do I find the true value of my domain names?
I bought a bunch of domain names last year and I've had a few offers. Nothing really stands out because I don't know the true value of my domain names. Most of the companies that I've researched don't seem to be too legit. Can someone help me find the true value of my domain names or at least point me in the right direct. Thanks in advance

Having personally or professionally bought and sold thousands of domain names (including the one we're playing on now) valuing well over $10M, I'm going to disagree a bit with Chris on the relevance of domain names. In fact, my domain name portfolio was, by a mile, the most resilient, best performing asset class I've owned over the last 5-7 years. An era where I've done a good amount of work in making sure people never had to type anything into a browser to get to my sites.
A good domain name always makes things easier. Always. Social media and search definitely usurped direct navigation but, again, a premium domain name makes everything easier when promoting a site on the big social media sites and domain characteristics certainly influence organic search in a big way.
To answer, the original question, domain comps are hard. I'd venture 95% of the domain names out there aren't worth more than their registration value. Probably less. People register some really stupid stuff.
The average domain sale of a "semi-premium" to "premium" domain name was a little under $1000 in 2007-2008 when I last did a big market analysis. Basically, this means if it can be used by a handful of people, it's worth that much.
Just about all the domain appraisal services out there are crap. I had one tell me a $900,000 domain was worth $11,000. The seller was not amused.
As Chris pointed out, there is some publicly available data out there to comp around. There are domain auctions all the time now and they publish their sales sheets. Sites like Sedo and Bido publish ongoing sales. There are domainer forums which would effectively crowdsource a market value for you.
Lastly, we've really only talked about the intrinsic name value to this point. If your site has 10 years of high quality .edu links into it or other SEO value, there's a valuation layer to be assessed for that.
Your best bet, should you be looking to sell, would be to submit to all the domain auctions and create a little competition. It's a pretty efficient marketplace and you'll get what they are truly worth.
PS. I'm always buying high-quality domains. Let me know if you'd like to connect on that.
1) No suprise, domain names are only as valuable as they are relevent. If the name is not identifying a product or service a business is marketing, they are of little value. In additon, social networking is beggining to make domain names less relevent, as people are searching on brands and services, and relying on feedback to determine where to go. The "where" part is usually included in links in the post, often hidden from view.
2) Be careful using domains that have other company's trademarks, as they may ask for those domains back under the cybersquatting laws.
I am not aware of any specific domain valuation services but you can see domain sales on sites like domaintools or godaddy, and you can look at some domain auction sites.
Assets will sell on the market based upon what the market will bear, (economics 101).
Examples:
1.) A graded and certified rare coin that sold mid-year 2008 for $32,500 sold mid-2009 at the same grade for $10,500
2.) A home that sold for $1,250,000 in 2005 can't even sell this year for $750,000
In the current environment where cash is king, assets recently purchased in the last few years seem to be selling at about 50c on the dollar this year.
I would suggest you keep your domain names till the market returns to a more normal heartbeat, oh say about the year 2015.
my domain http://vimux.com is valued at $3 000 due to it been a short .com and having backlinks
You Can find the value for the bulk of domains you purchased by using www.zippozap.com. It is good and appraise and valuate the domain names shortly.
http://www.vupak.com is probably worthh like $100. its short but it could go up or down dependent on other factors. A domain is worth what the buyer is willing to pay really
Thanks for this useful info, I want to sell my site http://www.gamblersinsight.com but I cannot find a true appraisal for it as the many ways that I have looked at always give me a different value. Does anyone have an idea of what I should value it at so I can list it on flippa. Thanks in advance
