Which book on online video is the most useful?

Between video containers and formats, AVI, MPEG, MP4, AVS, MKV, Pinnacle, Premier, vReveal, iPhone video, etc., I'd like to find a book that describes what they all are, when to use them, and how to convert, upload, and learn it all the easiest way possible. I don't like the Dummies series. What do you recommend?

Larry,

There aren't any really good books that address the topics you mention in a comprehensive way that's understandable to those not immersed in using them on a regular basis. Steve Garfiled's "Get Seen" is OK but fairly rudimentary and heavily weighted on YouTube info.

But you're in luck as I am in the process of writing: "NuTubes: How the Online Video Revolution is Reinventing Media and How You Can Profit From It." In the meantime, I'm happy to answer any specific questions you have.

Let me know.

Thanks, Larry. I see no reason why, if carefully and artfully explained, the average user can't understand the basic issues, such as what media is best for webpages, how to convert, etc.

If you would like a collaborator who can ask questions and translate material to assure anyone will understand it, let me know.

Thank you. I'd like to take you up on your offer and start out by asking, in addition to specifics you've mentioned in your OP, what are your big challenges, questions and information needs regarding online video? Is it primarily about software or hardware choices or operations? shooting and production? online distribution & promotion? Let me know either here or by email.

Best,
Larry J.

Great, Larry.

I have a professional photography background from a prior life, so I'm OK on that aspect. But once I get the video in the iPhone and then transferred to my computer, the issues come up.

Which format should I work in? Should I convert it to something else? What container would be the most appropriate? Based on the use, which format should I save it to so I can use it on the web and the most people get to see it? For mobile?

A different question: On the subject of of DVDs, once I have downloaded a movie in MKV, AVI, or other format and want to burn it to a double layered DVD, which programs are the easiest and most reliable? Do I need to do a conversion first? If so, when and why and to what? How do I do it for playing on a BluRay player?

Those are the questions that come to mind at the moment.
