Which first: Lean or ERP?

We're thinking about using lean practices but also need to update our computer system. Which first?

The ERP selection should be the initial focus as you want to select an ERP that has the lean capabilities as a sub-set of the entire ERP capabilities. If you select an ERP where lean manufacturing requires numerous work-arounds, then by definition you will not be able to implement a clean lean manufacturing process.

Once the appropriate ERP is deployed, you will be able to leverage the ERPs capabilities to help with the lean manufacturing process and work flows. In addition, you will also be able to use a phased-in approach to established lean manufacturing processes while maintaining proper control of inventory management, product costing, general ledger accounting, etc.

I agree with Bob. And one thing's for sure: using some ERP software will FORCE you to organize your business... and that's a GOOD thing.
