Each customer is different. Some are email junkies and some like the phone and some like to see my beautiful face. Don't try to put everyone in the same box.
Emma, you placed quite an interesting question which I believe poses a complex answer: "it depends on what type of communication you are talking about and its objectives"
Direct mail is probably a very weak tool for this sector and its rate of effectiveness extremely low -although this answer may upset the guys at DMA.
Phone calls are an extremely effective tool -either if they are made by classical methods or plain VoIP. The use of collaborative tools (GoToMeeting, Skype and others) is gaining a predominant place as it allows for voice-data interactions that are essential in the industry.
Social Media -including technical forums- have many adepts and they are crucial for the industry and networking sites are in the rise.
You will use social media mostly to share/transfer knowledge while you will use VoIP and collaborative tools to engage customers in demos. You will use networking sites to get leads, contact people and promote services.
Email is the predominant way for day-to-day as well as confidential communications.
As per cold-calling, it is getting more and more unwanted. But networking through resources as Linkedin is gaining terrain
