Which network bandwidth monitor is best?

I've been trying to find a bandwidth monitor online, but I'm having trouble figuring out which ones are trustworthy. What do you recommend?

I use SolarWinds Orion Network Performance Monitor. The stats and e-mail alerts sent to my blackberry when there is a problem is helpful to keep an eye on my network no matter where I am. The reports are very informative and easy to understand for when I have to give presentations to management.

Could you specify your environment? What applications do you need to measure bandwidth for? Is it bandwidth used by a particular application running on the computer or amount of traffic crossing LAN/WAN ports of network equipment or bandwidth taken by specific class of traffic such as HTTP, E-mail, VoIP, P2P or bandwidt of a bus connecting CPU,RAM and I/O devices in your servers? There are differenct approaches how to collect and process this information.

WebSpy (well known software developer) is about to launch a home and small network monitoring solution that can lets you monitor multiple computers' (on your network) bandwidth usage, ISP quota usage, connection speed and much more.

Personally can't wait till it is launched. There are so many bandwidth monitoring apps out there but this one seems spot on, user friendly and cheap.

Solar Winds is a great tool. Again, at the risk of sounding repetitive, there are just so many different issues you can resolve with that toolset. It comes with port mapper, scanner, Subnet calulator, Bandwidth monitor, etc. Very versatile. Any engineer appreciates real time status and alrets on their systems. Hope this helps!

Well, according to your requirement, network monitor is what you are looking for. With a network monitor, you can monitor the bandwidth, the connections, http and so on.There are free and commercial version at the same time, you need to choose the best suitable one according to your requirement and budget.
I am using Capsa now, it is useful and easy to use.

Hi Diane,

I recommend Total View One by PresiNET. VERY easy to use, configures in 20 minutes, and stores up to 7 years of traffic (minus the payload). Over 350 views of your network traffic. Also, have a look at Tim O'Neill's blog on TAP vs SPAN ports.

Give me a shout if you would like a demo via WebEx or G2M.
