Unless you have a development staff, I'd stick with one of the open source e-commerce platforms with tens of thousands of coders to back you up.
I've used osCommerce a number of times and never had any big complaints.
If you are looking at integrating the shopping cart into websites, I think that SimpleCart is good and very simple to integrate. Its a simple javascript shopping cart in under 20kb that you can setup in minutes. It's lightweight, fast, simple to use, and completely customizable. All you need to know is basic HTML.
