I agree with can. These are tools for larger organizations, most small and mid-market companies find Business Objects, Cognos and PowerPivot to be cost prohibitive. For those companies, there are less expensive tools such as Crystal reports which is part of the BO suite. Each of the large vendors, Oracle, IBM and Microsoft have tools to fit the company budget and need. Gartner and Forrester both publish reports annually covering which tools are best suited for which environment.

There are not much doubt about Top Vendors for Enterprise BI.
Gartner's highly regarded Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence is based on Gartner’s detailed customer surveys, interviews and analysis. Truth is, most companies will only consider software vendors that appear on the Magic Quadrant.
These are by ability to execute and completeness of vision:
Microsoft, Oracle, Microstrategy, IBM, Information Builders, SAS, QlikTech,SAP Business Objects.
But, what is also a little less known are other survey's results.
If you are interested in exclusively ease of use of BI product, then leaders are some new players:
Tableau, Targit, LogiXML, Tibco Software, BIRST, Advizor
From Overall Customer Experience perspective, leaders are
Advizor, Tableau, Salient, Corda, while SAP is, for example very low.
So, choosing a right BI vendor is often multi-dimensional process, it is not enough just to pick vendors that are positioned int the top right corner of Gartner Magic Quadrant, you have to ask yourself what is also important, like ease of use, complex types of analysis, customer experience, satisfaction with vendors etc.

According to Gartner Research, the big five (SAP, Oracle, SAS, IBM and Microsoft) accounted for over 70% of the BI market in 2010.

In addition to them, there are fifteen more vendors that were included in Gartner’s 2011 BI Magic Quadrant as described very well by Hrvoje.

I’m working on a directory of BI & Analytics solutions from around the world that is approaching 500 applications. All of them are different, some innovative. They range from generic to industry specific, from high cost to free or open source; from basic reporting to sophisticated predictive analytics, from OLAP to advanced visualization, from desktop to browser based, from BPM to dashboards, from on-premise to cloud; and there are many that offer Excel interface or integration.

When BI and analytics are intelligently deployed they become a strategic competitive advantage that results in increased profitability. This is the reason for the 13.4% growth of the BI market in 2010 and the growing number of new vendors entering the market.

I’m convinced that the BI landscape will continue to change and through innovation adapt to satisfy the needs of the BI users whose utilization rate, according to various studies, is estimated only around 5%.

We Are Cloud

Depending on the needs of your organization, SaaS BI may be of more value to you than an on-premise solution. This is most likely the case with SMBs and departments within large organizations. I would consider We Are Cloud (with their solution Bime™) as a top vendor - Bime enables organizations to deploy an on-demand BI solution at a fraction of the cost and within a fraction of the time of traditional BI solutions. Where other BI tools require writing scripts, building pre-defined data models and lengthy training before you can use them; Bime gets you and your company working with your data from day one, meaning you can rapidly reveal unseen threats and new opportunities, creating significant economic value. Bime's unique ability to extract dimensions and metrics from your website traffic data thanks to the Google Analytics API really sets it apart from other solutions. It allows you to ask dynamic questions, drill up, drill down into your clickstream data, and understand trends, patterns and relationships through cutting edge visualizations. What's more, you can mix and match your online and on-premise data to your heart's content, as Bime allows you to connect to both the online and the on-premise world in the same place.

I think the Top 5 established BI vendors for enterprise businesses are (in no order of preference or ranking)
1. SAP Business Objects
2. Oracle Hyperion
3. IBM Cognos
4. Microstrategy
5. Qlikview

More and more, the ERP vendors who own the BI product have penetrated in their customer base to sell on their native connectivity and technology proposition to expand their market share. So the leader quadrant might look different from a market share perspective as opposed to the product / innovation capabilities perspective. Cheers.
