Who are the top vendors for an email marketing system?

Eloqua? Marketo? Who's at the top of your list?

There are email only solutions like Constant Contact, ExactTarget, and e-Dialog, as well as MailChimp.

There are marketing automation systems which add landing pages, lead nurturing and lead scoring capabilities such as Marketo, Eloqua and Silverpop. Silverpop has a long heritage in email and is quite strong.

Hope that helps.

I think http://www.aweber.com/ is the most popular. However, there are others that I have either used or heard of:

Eloqua and Marketo are Marketing automation system, which include an email marketing part. But as Joe points out, there are software that are specialized in email marketing!

Hi Donna,

Eloqua and Marketo are indeed marketing automation platform vendors as Martin said. They go beyond email marketing and email marketing is used in processes that include triggered emails, emails in function of the different stages of the lead cycle, scenario-based interactions, behavioral features, cross-channel approaches, lead nurturing etc. They are far from the only players in this area but in the US I guess they are known best.

Several email marketing service providers have features that approach those that you typically find in marketing automation platforms and many of them are strongly integrated with other channels, CRM, etc.

The list Joe gave you is mainly a list for small businesses (except Bronto). That does not mean they are bad, in fact many of them offer very interesting features. MailChimp for instances is ideal for newsletters that are driven by RSS feeds and have a strong social media component. Most of them also allow easy third-party integration, meaning you can easily combine them with web-based software, for instance for surveys, event registration and more.

Major email marketing service providers often have these features built-in.

There are literally hundreds of email marketing service providers. However, I am repeating myself a bit, what matters is your goals and ROI. That's the main criterion in your choice.

So, in order to be able to properly reply this, more details would be necessary. Maybe after doing this, you will indeed need a MAP (Marketing Automation Platform such as Eloqua and Marketo) instead of an ESP (Email marketing Service Provider such as the small business oriented ones Joe mentioned or larger ESPs like Lyris, StrongMail, indeed Bronto, EmailVision and several ones I now forget.

On your question which one is best (Marketo or Eloqua): again, it will depend. Personally I use other ones but that has to do with the nature of my business (smaller business), among other reasons.
