Eric,

Here is a great list created by Paul Greenberg (The "Godfather" of CRM)

Chris Bucholtz of Forecasting Clouds also does an annual list - here's the one from last year:

Please take a look at what Brian is presenting. Vendors aren't thought leaders. There are people at vendors who are thought leaders - among them, for example, Michael Wu at Lithium or Anthony Lye at Oracle, but thought leaders are the experts in the space who educate not software providers. My list and Chris Bucholtz's are two of many that are out there. I'll be doing an updated version of that list in January. Please watch for it. If you'd like to talk over other names or ask specific questions please feel free to contact me at paul-greenberg3@comcast.net

The vendors with the clearest differentiators are listed below. This is not quite the same as thought leadership, but it is closely related and easier to define:

NetSuite: Most tightly integrated accounting functionality. Broad functionality.

SalesForce: Most extensive SFA functionality. Huge mind share

EnterpriseWizard: Most deeply configurable without programming. Best guarantee.

SugarCRM: Greatest mind share among open-source devotees. Best marketing.

Microsoft: Deepest Outlook integration and huge mind share. Microsoft!

Oracle: Deepest understanding of Fortune 100 requirements. Multiple products in suite.

Right Now Technologies: Deepest external support automation. Not cheap.

SAP: Deepest ERP integration. Strong in manufacturing.

Zoho: Broadest range of functionality for small businesses. Cheap.

Apart from Zoho, which is a new entrant, these vendors are all listed in the following white paper:

I would have to say Salesforce.com and SugarCRM, but there are tons of cheaper clones in the market!

I agree with Rushabh. Both of above are one of the best CRMs available on this planet. But I think SugarCRM is now becoming more popular with compare to Salesforce.com because of its open source policy. Even you can compare both the products in google trends you will see SugarCRM id going quite nice.
