Who is generally responsible for training end users at your organization on how to use SharePoint?

Does your internal IT department usually provide the training? Does your organization hire an external training company? Or does your organization not provide formal training at all?

We have no formal SharePoint training. Unfortunately most of our SharePoint deployment is a mess, we have upgraded one mess in 2003 to another mess in MOSS and from there have added more chaos to the point of needing a serious rebuild. Without governance there is no way to proceed with training and without either training or governance to follow, those people brave enough to even try to use the platform are confused by the lack of consistency they see across the sites that have been developed. Failed deployments are called failures for a reason, but they aren't usually the result of the people that current work in them, but rather the lack of understanding from non-SharePoint professionals before them...another obvious need for training!

I strongly believe however that most in-house training can be very successful just by providing a peer group setting, allowing power users to learn from one another with sharing and encouraging excitement about SharePoint development. We do this with our division, but we do not share that excitement for SP outside the division simply because IT can't support the development we might encourage. Just one tactic of a failed deployment to try to contain the mess and get a handle on it...our day will come eventually, for now training is at a standstill for most everyone else.

Thanks for your response. Implementing an enterprise-wide technology like SharePoint is a big undertaking. As you mentioned, a sound governance strategy is key. It is also important to match the implementation to an organization's project management maturity level to ensure that the proper foundation and processes are in place before implementing the technology. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

I've seen business fund training, and I've seen IT fund training. I've seen it done inhouse and seen it outsourced.

In my experience, the best results come from inhouse training funded from a central SharePoint budget, with vendors authorised by IT.

Thanks for your response. Whether internal or external, the important thing is that training happens!
