I don't think there's a particular market segment that Microsoft is targeting with BPOS, although it seems like early traction is coming in the enterprise segment. It also looks like Microsoft has been particularly successful in the education and public sector markets. BPOS has to work for Microsoft - Google is already taking significant market from Microsoft in the collaboration market and you can expect Cisco and SFDC to make a run at this as well. The company plans to add Office Web Apps into the BPOS suite which is a good move. In the long run, you should expect the BPOS value prop to play even better in the SMB segment than up market, but driving early adoption with large, established MSFT customers seems to be where the company is starting for now.
