A deep subject matter knowledge of the community, or the ability to learn a beat fast...skilled at interacting with multiple stakeholders, seeing the big picture, but paying keen attention to the details that make community members feel valued.

Stamina, a level head, and a thick skin, as well as a sense of autonomy and ability to innovate with a live product. A talent for differentiating engagement factors across multiple platforms, and picking the winners to deploy on his/her own community.

That would be my personal ideal vision.:)

I like Lindsay's answer but I would almost value less knowledge in the field and place higher value on "learn a beat fast". This way they can learn and grow with the newest members of the community but also ask questions of the more experienced members, thus drawing in two separate groups.

There definitely needs to be consistency, and the heart of a curator. If this person is not constantly thinking about what the community would like to see, or out there banging the drum about the larger issues that directly affect this community, they're probably not the best person for the job.

Also the ability to go off the beaten path, the desire to feature others rather than promoting his or her own work and finally, the type of person who places a value on picking up the phone or sending a personal email, these things go SO far in creating an amazing community.
