Who participates in crowdsourcing?

Who is participating in your tasks? Who makes up the "crowd"?

Toby - I have a two-part answer to this question.

Part 1:
The crowd varies across each platform or crowdsourcing initiative but can be categorized on two dimensions. First, their motivation to participate. Second, their degree of separation to the organization.

Motivation defines why the crowd is participating. It's because of Love, Money, or Glory (http://sloanreview.mit.edu/the-magazine/articles/2010/spring/51303/the-collec...).

The degree of separation means that you can source from the public, from partners, and employees hence the terms "crowdsourcing", "community-sourcing", and "expert-sourcing."

Your crowdsourcing process, platform and incentive structure will be setup differently depending on these two dimensions (among a few others).

Part 2:
I am the co-founder of a crowdsourced consulting firm, Whinot. Currently, our crowd breaks down to 1/6 trusted personal network contacts, 1/6 students, 1/3 independent consultants and 1/3 corporate/government employees who are looking for something challenging to when they get home from work.

Hope this helps. Happy to chat live about this topic.
