Why do Australians lose an average of $1300 on gambling per person each year?

For comparative persons, the United States only loses $400 per adult resident each year. What explains the huge per capita losses in Australia?

Scott,

Australia is the home of Aristocrat Leisure Industries the second largest slot machine manufacturer in the world and market maker for video slot machines. The country has several Las Vegas styled casinos in Sidney and Melbourne which attract gamblers from around the world. In addition to the casinos there are numerous "football" clubs throughout the country where Australians routinely gather that have gaming devices. Finally, in my opinion, the Australian people are very social and enjoy having a good time. They meet at their club or casino and gaming is something they enjoy doing.
