Why do you choose to "like" a brand on Facebook?

Is it because you genuinely support the brand? Is it because you're hoping for freebies? Is it because it's your best friend's company, and he told you to "like" their fan page? What motivates you to like a brand's page on Facebook?

It's because I value the "content" that is inserted in my feed. I usually find the content interesting or helpful. For example, I follow the Denon brand page on Facebook. Not only do they announce new products but they also provide discussion of interesting features (helpful) and have DJs discuss their favorite music (interesting).

I unfriend brands that do too many posts to their Facebook page or do too much promotion. Also, I have seen other people "like" brand as a way to communicate to their friends that they support the brand.

Caty,

Sometimes I "like" a brand for research purposes in my work. Sometimes I "like" it because I am somewhat passionate about the brand and sometimes I do it, just for kicks. However, I would say that I maybe read only 10% of the stuff that is in my stream and most of the time I end up ignoring them.

However, I am not the norm....or am I?

I Like a few companies/brands because I'm interested in their content, but I think that most of the time it's either because I'm trying to support my graphic/web design clients who happen to have a FB page it Twitter feed, or I just want to support other entities that I love. I don't spend that much time in those spaces these days, so I have more interest in using them as vehicles for positioning.
