Why is there such a difference in quality between US and international (e.g. Asian) carriers?

I have always beleived that, in thrird world countries, carriers are limited by local physical cable infrastructures. In one country, the quality was so poor and service so unreliable, we installed a satalite communications link. I have not experienced the same voice quality issues in developed countries such as Japan, South Africa, Israel, ect.

Good points Timothy. In addition I think one of the largest issues with the US compared to a place like Japan is land mass. Japan has always been cutting edge when it comes to wireless network speed because the entire country is about the size of California. Carriers in the US have been forced to spread their resources thin to make sure that there are no "dead spots" on their network nationwide. Since updating antennas is very expensive they have been forced to roll out new features only in major metropolitan areas whereas carriers in Japan ca upgrade an entire country for a much lower cost.
