Would you rather be a 'jack-of-all trades' or a 'master of one'?

In today's job market would you rather be specialized in one area or have several areas in which you are good at? Why?

Competent generalist but known for specialist knowledge in one or two areas.

Although I am self employed (so a slightly different context perhaps), I think the need to have broad understanding of issues is essential and if I get horribly stuck on an area in which I do not have particular expertise I will always try to find someone who has that knowledge.

I rather think that we should not be nervous of saying "I don't know" sometimes as long as we can demonstrate a willingness to find out or find someone who can satisfy the need.
