Would you tell candidates what (not) to wear for an interview?
Today's guest on Drive Thru HR is a talent recruiter for Oakley. During the course of the conversation she mentioned that she asks her candidates not to wear a suit to the interview. The reason behind the request is due to Oakley's culture. Oakley wants their employees to be themselves, and feels that wearing a suit to the interview is the exact opposite of being oneself.
On the one hand, I could see wearing a suit as being a measure of respect. On the other hand, I agree that it could strip the individuality out of a person. What do you think? Would you tell a candidate what, or what not, to wear for an interview?

It depends on my role in the process. Hiring manager, no. Bring me who you are. Recruiter? Probably. I want to set you up for success. Outside recruiter? Hells yeah. My business depends on you being successful, so I'll do everything I can to prep you.
I'd give general direction because I don't want a candidate to turn up and a suit and tie and then find me in converse and jeans. Normally something along the lines of, "we have quite a relaxed dress code, so don't think you need to come wearing a suit".
If they do.....well that is their choice.
