Biofuels in Africa: When it comes to clean energy production, Africa is at a crossroads. The production of industrial biofuels has the potential to be a boon for producers and could potentially sow the seeds for a middle-class throughout the continent. However, shortage of infrastructure to cope with biofuel production, and land grabs across Africa are among the challenges. In this roundtable discussion, experts explained what is at stake and what could be done to ensure that the exploitation of biofuel results in a bright future for the developing continent.

Topics included:

  • EU’s thirst for biofuels and its impact on Africa
  • The truth behind the ""food vs. fuel"" issue
  • The cost and carbon footprint of different biofuels

Some interesting thoughts/comments. Jatropha curcas is primary candidate for source of biofuel in Africa. Biofuel is a leading candidate that could help drive African exports. The food vs. fuel debate is really a broader issue around the lack of scaled agriculture know how and development. There is still relatively little scaled effort at biofuel development in Africa although there are plenty of smaller projects and test cases.
