Defining Cloud Computing
Highlights
There are two competing views of cloud computing. One view, which is represented canonically by the NIST definitions, sees cloud computing as an amalgamation of 'resource pools' and focuses on attributes such as 'elasticity' and 'self-service'. Another view, promoted largely by Randy and the Cloudscaling team, sees cloud computing as a disruptive change in the IT paradigm, just like the transition from mainframe computing to enterprise (client/server) computing. Can these views be reconciled? Are the NIST views of value still? Why might it make sense to re-think how we discuss and position cloud computing today?
