I really like Debbie's comments about the importance of following up on those who give you a business card the same day. That's why I'm such a fan of LinkedIn's iPhone app CardMunch. Once you take a picture of the business card its sent off to be manually transcribed and then sent back the application. You can configure it to automatically send a LinkedIn request and with the touch of one icon can email your contact information.
