The Viability of Coal and Natural Gas as Alternative Energy Sources

Summary

As demand on world oil supplies increase, rapidly developing countries are searching for other available sources of fuel to satiate their demand for energy. China, India in particular are investing heavily in diverse sources of energy--namely coal, natural gas, and shale gas. Recently, Celanese Corp. developed TCX, by which companies can convert coal or LNG to ethanol at $60/barrel. There has, however, been some controversy as to whether or not these investments and technological breakthroughs can meet the energy needs of China, India, and other rapidly developing countries.  Join us for this exciting roundtable where we will discuss the viability of coal and natural gas as alternative fuels.

Topics Include:

  • The state of LNG and coal demand, production, and distribution
  • The effect of Celanese's TCX on global energy supplies
  • Causes of the looming shortfall in coal production: inattention or peak coal
