Is Salesforce.com trying to be an applications or platform vendor?

Definitely both.
Salesforce.com is a big player in cloud computing but the firm is still relatively small by revenue compared to the incumbents. They've got tons of room to grow and are taking steps to make sure they take full advantage of their potential.
