Waiting for Amazon to greenlight your request to have more than 20 simultaneous instances is the biggest bottleneck. If you don't have a customer rep then it can take several days.

Have a "free-fire account". Everyone has access, but everything gets deleted by ops on Friday afternoon. Encourages playing and creative experimentation while capping cost at a reasonable level. more

What are some of the bandwidth costs people have seen on S3 as a percentage of total storage spend?

Bandwidth is like 30% of our storage costs. Bandwidth on S3 is definitely overpriced relative to the costs of a CDN, this is a real issue for us. more

How are people tracking S3 usage (cost) live via an API?

https://www.cloudability.com has an API you can use to pull down your costs. It provides a breakdown by service and other dimensions. As far as we know it's the only way to access cost & usage data for AWS, Rackspace, Heroku, etc. via API. more
