At what point should a small company (2-50 employees) start considering an ERP installation?

In a nutshell, when the company has many external data sources (spreadsheets, external databases, etc) and cannot effectively manage their day to day operations.

I can actually answer this without the IF. Customers have been brutalized by ERP software. The cost is ridiculously high, the risk and disruption to your business almost fatal and the rigid restrictions it imposes on being able to change equates to rigor mortis.
