What is the best way to minimize the amount of Patches necessary on a Windows system?

Those are some good points, Nick. I will say this, though:
Even though the list of workarounds and the attack method might affect *when* you apply a patch, it shouldn't completely prevent you from eventually mitigating that vulnerability unless the affected code is simply not installed ... more

Is it good practice to use multiple vendor products at each level (desktop, gateway, server, etc.)?

Until about 2 or 3 years ago, most auditors would insist that you had to have a separate product at the gateway vs server/desktop, or on the server vs the desktop.
