What is Salesforce's view of the marketing automation industry?

You can make that argument about practically any acquisition they have made - or will make. If the opportunity is big enough, and if having a fully-integrated solution makes sense for customers (which it absolutely does) they will at some point go after it.

Take a look at Infusionsoft (www.infusionsoft.com) - they've been doing marketing automation combined with CRM and ecommerce in one platform for small businesses for appx. 7 years with great success. Marketing automation vendors such as Eloqua are primarily email-centric, but what about social?

Short answer... yes. Social media and content marketing are two of the most under developed areas in marketing automation right now. But, I think you just have to look at recent announcements, particularly those at Dreamforce, to realize where the market is going.
