There is no comprehensive *safe* test for your anti-virus product short of using live virus samples on a sandbox test system, and I do NOT recommend that for any but the most experienced of security professionals.

If you are on a tight budget many of the open source products are highly comparable to the big 5 offerings. Also home grown works as well, 3 guesses who supports the do not build your own philosophy…
